I get many questions about the Habu yarns I use in my designs. In this class you will have a chance to swatch with a large variety of Habu yarns, combining two, three or even four strands to see what textures you come up with. We will work with stainless steel, copper, raw silk, pineapple, nettle, as well as wool, cotton and linen. While you are swatching, I will discuss where and how to use the different textures with examples from my trunk show.

Materials fee: $10-20

Alchemy Waterfall Scarf or Magician’s Scarf

November 13, 2011

Alchemy Yarns - Shibori Scarf Workshop

This workshop is all about texture and color, which the yarns from Alchemy are known for! We will focus on two unique scarves - the Magician’s Scarf and the Waterfall Scarf, both utilizing the technique of combining felting and non-felting fibers for a surprising and satisfying effect.

The design for the Magician’s Scarf came first - we call this scarf magic because of the remarkable transformation that happens after it is knit. Trading on basic principles of Shibori, two Alchemy fibers (Silken Straw & Sanctuary) are combined while knitting the piece. Once complete, the scarf is felted (easily done in the washing machine), and magically, the ruffled edges appear! Unlike conventional felting, your piece will actually gorw in length and width as opposed to shrinking. Only the felting fiber (Sanctuary) will shrink, while the non-felting fiber (Silken Straw) will grow.

Since the concepts of knitting and felting these two scarves are the same, we will cover both pieces in this single workshop.

Materials required - Magician’s Scarf:
2 skeins Alchemy Yarns Silken Straw (100% silk; 236 yds/40 g)
1 skein Alchemy Yarns Sanctuary (30% silk, 70% wool; 125 yds/50 g)
US size 5 (3.75mm) circular needles (24-32” length)
Tapestry needle

Homework - please complete prior to coming to class:
Cast on 349 sts with Silken Straw “Color A”.

Materials required - Waterfall Scarf:
3 skeins Alchemy Yarns Silken Straw (100% silk; 236 yds/40 g)
1 skein Alchemy Yarns Sanctuary (30% silk, 70% wool; 125 yds/50 g)
US size 6 (4mm) circular needles (24” length)
A set of double-point needles - US size 6 (for making I-cord)
Tapestry needle

Homework - please complete prior to coming to class:
With Sanctuary Yarn (referred to as Color A in the pattern), cast on 4 sts using double-point needles and make an I-cord that measures 70”.
If you have time, you can make a second I-cord at the same time, as you will need it later in the pattern (don’t worry if you don’t get the 2nd one made, it’s just easier to measure both at the same time for consistency).
