Students choose whether they want to make a scarf or a shawl we recommend that they do a scarf at least 10 inches wide to really get the effect of the bias fabric created by the Clapotis pattern. Students will need to get the appropriate yardage for the size project they would like to complete.
The pattern is written for a wrap that finishes at 21 inches wide by 55 inches long. For this size and a gauge of 4.75 sts to the inch, the recommended yardage by the author of the Clapotis pattern is 820 yards.
Materials
Yarn: 400-1000 yards of yarn that will give between 4.5 to 6 stitches to the inch. If a yarn thicker than 4.5 sts per inch is chosen, the drop stitches get too long. If a thinner yarn is chosen, more knitting has to be done to complete the project.
Needles: Size appropriate for yarn chosen. Bring a 4 x 4 swatch to class done in stockinette stitch. I prefer the swatch to be more to the recommended gauge of the yarn rather than too loose because it helps to hold the shape better.
Stitch Markers: 20 of the closed type for a shawl, less needed for scarf
